The art of novel writing allows authors to convey valuable ideals through fictitious characters. Nicholas Sparks displays attributes of an honorable man in his novel “The Lucky One” through Logan Thibault, a Marine veteran who searches for the purpose of his survival. Thibault’s gentle strength convinces the reader that the lost must simply focus on taking care of others. With this attitude, there is no individual whose energy won’t be found and directed by nature’s divine force of connection. Military men are fundamentally admired for their commitment to community service with regards to risking their lives for the citizens of their nation. However, Sparks illustrates that the soldiers’ courage to endure the mental and emotional effects of spending time on the battlefield makes them even more respectable. From his initial days back home, it is evident that Thibault feels isolated from his loved ones due to post-traumatic stress. When the sound effects from his nephew’s war video games cause Thibault to uncontrollably exercise a violent self-defense response on the kid, the veteran recognizes that his presence is a threat to the safety of his family and leaves. Thibault assumes full personal responsibility for the repercussions of his psychological condition. In order to minimize the family’s guilt, Thibault attributes his departure to a factor unrelated to the boy. Thibault behaves with complete forgiveness, which guides those he interacts with to recognize their full potentials.
Despite the presence of intense emotion, Thibault responds selflessly when he is denied by his lover Beth. Thibault is purely compassionate, as he acknowledges that her reasons for breaking up with him are due to threats from her abusive ex-husband Keith. Thibault responds with the concise statement: “You deserve better”. Beth takes this seriously and gathers the courage from within to approach Keith with an assertive unwillingness to tolerate his abuse. When Beth is ready to come back to Thibault, he reaches out and offers his unconditional support. This is similar to God’s encouragement of our growth and His constant willingness to forgive us, in spite of sinful human nature.
This story of Thibault emphasizes the significant role that compassion contributes to understanding, and underscores the way that service can educate the mind about the human condition. Through evaluating the thoughts and actions of virtuous characters, we can understand what it means to be good person before we strive to be one.
